The Bergen County Jail on River Street in Hackensack.

(New York, NY) – A New Jersey man is suing the Bergen County Jail, claiming he was badly beaten while in custody, allegedly for refusing to wear a straitjacket. The lawsuit also names Bergen County and several jail employees as plaintiffs. Hackensack resident Valmir Xhemajli, 34, says he suffered a collapsed lung as a result of the beating.

He also accuses officers of unnecessarily pepper spraying him. The incident in question dates back to early October, 2021. Xhemajli was left bleeding, coughing, and struggling to breathe while lying on the floor, according to the lawsuit. In 2019 he sued the Paterson Police Department and settled for $75,000, after claiming he was beaten following an argument with a nurse at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.
