News: Capitol Police Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony
WASHINGTON (77WABC) — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has competition for the position of Speaker of the House.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) — the former chair of the right-wing Freedom Caucus — on Tuesday announced he is running against McCarthy. Biggs’ candidacy gives McCarthy detractors a candidate to rally around.
The House votes for speaker on Jan. 3 — McCarthy needs majority support.
Biggs announced his candidacy in an op-ed for the conservative Daily Caller, urging colleagues to “break the establishment.”
