NEW YORK (77WABC) — A new statistic shows that the MTA is finally making progress on improving underground safety, according to the chief of the MTA police.

The MTA and NYPD are stepping up enforcement on the subways.

“When you don’t enforce the little things, when you don’t enforce the minor infractions like fare evasion, other things seem to spiral out of control,” MTA Police Department Chief John Mueller told ABC 7.

This week, fare beating summonses are up 118% from last week. The surge in cops has led to skyrocketing arrests for more serious crimes, up 95%.

Transit crimes year over year are up 40.8 %. NYPD crime stats for the week ending Oct. 30 show 1,910 vs. 1,357 incidents comparing 2022 to 2021.
