Coney Island, Brooklyn NY (77WABC)- Three young children were found dead on Coney Island Beach at West 35th St. around 4:42 am Monday. NYPD Chief Kenneth Corey says a woman, believed to be the children’s mother, was taken into police custody and is at the 60th precinct for questioning.
The Chief says officers from the 60th Precinct received a 911 call at 1:41 am from a concerned family member that the mother, who lives at 3325 Neptune Ave., may have harmed her children. The Chief said during a Monday morning press conference that the caller lives at a different location.
Officers were met at the Neptune Ave. location by the children’s father who the Chief said also stated similar concerns. The father told police he believed the woman and the children were on the Coney Island boardwalk.
Chief Corey said, ” the officers began along with other officers from the 60th precinct a search for the woman and her children that involved canvassing the boardwalk, the beach, the streets of Coney Island, Coney Island Hospital and her own apartment at 3325 Neptune Avenue where the officers found the door unlocked.”

The search continued for another 90 minutes until officers were directed to Brighton 6th St. and Riegelmann Boardwalk resulting from another 911 call. The Chief says a 30-year-old woman was found barefoot “soaking wet” on the boardwalk in the company of other family members. She was taken to the 60th Precinct for questioning.
The Chief says the search then “intensified” for the three children, using aviation, harbor units and additional “canvassing of the shoreline.” It was during that search that the Chief said the three children were found, a 7-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl and a 3 1/2 month old infant girl.
Officers immediately initiated CPR on the three children. The Chief says the children were rushed to Coney Island Hospital where “regrettably” they were pronounced deceased.
Chief Corey said preliminarily there were no prior incidents of child abuse or neglect involving the children.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
