NEW YORK (77WABC) — Speed cameras in New York City are now going 24/7.

Beginning August 1st, speed and red light cameras will be watching drivers around the clock. Up until now, cameras were only operating on weekdays from 6am to 10pm Monday through Friday.  Transportation officials say more than half of deadly accidents city-wide happened when the cameras were not being used.

Drivers will be getting fair warning—as  the city unveils a safety campaign in alerting drivers to ease up on the accelerator.

Violators will be slapped with $50 dollar tickets.
