News: Texas elementary school shooting
UVALDE, Texas (77WABC) — There’s been a new revelation about the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
A source has confirmed to ABC News that none of the officers checked to see if the doors to the classrooms were locked as they waited for a janitor to bring keys. This comes as police reportedly waited for more than an hour in a hallway outside the classrooms where a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers.
Chief Pete Arredondo of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police was the incident commander during the May 24 mass shooting. Earlier this month, CNN reporters confronted Arredondo about why he hasn’t addressed victims families.
There were 77 minutes between when the alleged 18-year-old gunman entered the school through an unlocked door and when police fatally shot him, a source with knowledge of the investigation told ABC News. Sources told ABC News that Arredondo is not cooperating with investigators probing the shooting, although Arredondo has denied he has been uncooperative.
Police response to the mass shooting is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and Texas State Police.
