Intern Dean Pavlou – How The Jets Really Improved During The Draft

charles-leclaire-usa-today-sports-2

Going into the draft the Jets had a lot of picks including two picks in the first round, and a lot of people saw them as a team to look out for in the draft. In the first round the Jets picked star Cornerback Ahmad Sauce Gardner out of Cincinnati fourth overall. Gardner didn’t allow a touchdown in college and rose up the Jets draft board as the draft process went along. Gardner became the highest Cincinnati draft pick ever when he got drafted fourth overall by the Jets. With the Jets second first round pick gm Joe Douglas selected Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Wilson was considered by many draft analysts as the best receiver in this draft class, and in 2021 had 70 catches, 1,058 yards, and 12 touchdowns. Wilson will be looking to continue his great play with New York, and help young quarterback Zach Wilson take strides in year two. At the end of the first round the Jets weren’t done trading up for Florida State defensive end Jermaine Johnson who Joe Douglas might’ve taken with the 10th overall pick if Garrett Wilson was off the board. New York followed that up by giving Zach Wilson a couple more weapons when they drafted running back Breece Hall out of Iowa State, and tight end Jeremy Ruckert who grew up in Long Island, and was hoping that he would get drafted by the Jets. Saleh and Douglas have described Hall as a home run hitter which is why they traded up two spots to get him. I think Hall will be a great running back for the Jets, and will be a great complement to second year running back Michael Carter who did a great job for New York in his first year. The Jets added seven players, and got a lot of day one starters during the draft. This is a big year for Zach Wilson and the Jets as they look to break their 11 year playoff drought.
