NEW YORK (AP) —An NYPD officer who was shot in the arm by a gunman in the Bronx has been released from the hospital.
The gunman was killed in the shootout. It happened around 10:45 Tuesday night. Officials say Officer Dennis Vargas and his partner spotted Rameek Smith and approached the suspect. They say Smith ran and the officers followed on foot. Smith turned and fired two shots. Vargas was shot in the left arm. He was treated at Lincoln Hospital. Smith was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died.
