NEW YORK (77WABC) — Despite a spike in COVID-19 sub-variants, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has promised no new COVID shutdowns similar to the one that crippled New York City at the height of the viral pandemic.

“I’m going to protect the health of New Yorkers, but I’m also protecting the economy,” she told 77WABC owner John Catsimatidis on The Cats Roundtable. “I’m not going to shut it down again, you can count on that.”
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a 100% closure of non essential businesses in the first quarter of 2020.
The five boroughs are currently considered a “low” risk for community spread. Health officials say the new subvariant of Omicron, BA.2, as of Wednesday accounted for about 80% of the state’s infections.
