Teen idol Bobby Rydell has died at age 79

NEW YORK -(77WABC)- 50’S and 60’s teen idol Bobby Rydell has died at the age of 79.

The Philadelphia native reportedly died of  pneumonia at his Florida home.

Rydell skyrocketed to the top of the pop charts with hits such as Volare and Wild One.

He was born Robert Louis Ridarelli, and got his career off the ground at a very young age after winning a contest with a Jazz band.

Rydell segued his career onto the big screen—co starring with Ann Margaret and Dick Van Dyke  in the 1963 movie Bye Bye Birdie.
