State Pols Told to Prep for Long Haul in Albany on Budget

New York Governor Kathy Hochul speaks about the budget for the Finger Lakes Region at the downtown campus of MCC.

NEW YORK (77 WABC) — The Democratic-led NY state legislature remains at odds with Governor Kathy Hochul. It’s over her dual push for criminal justice reforms and $850 million in public funding for a new Buffalo Bills Stadium — which is stalling budget passage of the 2023 fiscal budget plan.

The lack of a budge deal forces the State Legislature to pass a budget “extender. ” That will permit the state to meet payroll obligations for tens of thousands of state workers.

“Ultimately, it’ll be resolved in just a matter of days. We’re getting close,” Hochul told reporters Monday. “We filed an extender as of today to make sure that we can continue to pay our New York workers which is important, but also this gives them more time just to wrap up the final touches.”

When asked why Hochul and Legislative Leaders haven’t come to a final agreement, assembly speaker Carl Heastie blamed conversations tied to the late introduction of big ticket “policy” items.
