UKRAINE (77WABC) — A retired Russian general is standing by his statements made in January about the dangers of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine.
Leonid Ivashov heads a group of serving and retired Russian military officers. He told the New York Times he stands by his statement that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would be pointless and extremely dangerous. He added that it would kill thousands, make Russia and Ukraine enemies for life, risk a war with NATO allies and threaten the existence of Russia itself.
The Times reached Ivashov by phone, where he could not speak freely given Russia’s wartime censorship, however saying, “I do not disavow what I said.”
As Russia stalls in Ukraine, dissent is brewing over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, military losses are mounting and progress has slowed. Ukraine claims to have killed at least six Russian generals.
