NEW YORK (77WABC) — Despite New York City Mayor Eric Adams anti crime initiative, the subway system as experienced more than a 200% increase in crime in the past week alone.
NYPD statistics released Wednesday show there were 55 subway crimes for the week ending Sunday February 27, compared to 18 the week before.
The mayor and Governor Kathy Hochul haven’t said if the program needs to be revised.
There have been 375 subway crimes thru February 27, compared to 217 during the same time last year.
Hate crimes reports have also skyrocketed, with the week’s statistics showing a 200% increase year-over-year. Meanwhile, numbers for shootings, shooting victims and murders were down, statistics show.
The department found that total index crime – meaning crime that falls under the NYPD’s seven major offenses – was up 47.7% year-to-date.
