(77WABC) — 13 police officers were wounded in shootings over 24 hours Friday, in four states: Arizona, Maryland, New Mexico and Pennsylvania.
Friday morning, nine of the wounded officers responded to a domestic violence call in Phoenix in which the suspect and a female victim were killed.
Later Friday afternoon, two police officers were shot and wounded in Frederick, Maryland, while responding to calls of a suspicious person. The suspect was also shot during the incident, and Maryland officials transported him to a nearby hospital.
A New Mexico State Police officer was also shot and wounded Friday afternoon while chasing a vehicle that rammed into his police vehicle.
On Friday evening, a Philadelphia SWAT officer was shot while serving a drug warrant at an apartment building. A suspect inside the apartment allegedly fired two shots through the wall, hitting an officer in his body armor.
In 2021, FBI stats reveal 73 officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty — a 59% increase compared to 46 officers intentionally killed in 2020. The data also shows that the last time more than 72 officers were killed was in 1995, when 74 officers were intentionally killed on the job.
