NEW YORK (77WABC) — An NYPD detective who was shot in the leg while executing a drug-related search warrant on Staten Island was released from a hospital on Monday.
Detective Dominick Libretti was cheered by his fellow brothers in blue as he left Staten Island University Hospital. Officials said he suffered a potential “career-ending injury,” yet saved his team from the hail of gunfire using his ballistic shield Jan. 20.

Dr. Michael Cooper, director of the Burn Unit, performed one Libretti’s many surgeries.
“We did reconstructive surgery,” Cooper told Pix11. “He did very well, he’s hopefully going to get better and better so a lot of surgery a lot of pain but he’s a very strong individual.”
The smiling detective was pushed out of the hospital in a wheelchair with his son in his lap as bagpipes were playing and his brothers and sister in blue cheering him on.
39 -year-old Nelson Pizarro allegedly shot at the cops inside a house in Heartland Village as they executed a search warrant last month. Police say Pizzaro has seven prior arrests in New York, a gun arrest in Massachusetts and a larceny arrest in Connecticut.
Pizzaro has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault and weapons possession. He’s due back in court next week.
