WESTBURY, N.Y. (77WABC) – Long Island is leading the way in paying tribute to local service men and women who sacrificed their lives during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A ground breaking ceremony was held Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park at Eisenhower Park where a memorial is being built in their honor.
“When completed, this memorial will be the first on Long Island, and one of the first in the state, to honor the service men and women who served during the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran told News 12 Long Island.
Curran says the memorial will be the first on Long Island to honor those soldiers.
