BOSTON (AP) —The last time the New York Yankees won a world series it was 2009. The Bronx Bombers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series on November 4th. It was the Yankees first year of the new Yankee Stadium. The Yankees beat the Phillies in the best of seven fall classic 4 games to 2, marking their 27th World Championship and first under manager Joe Girardi.
History was not on their side Tuesday night in Boston. Yankees Ace Gerrit Cole flopped on the Fenway Park mound, not even an appearance by Boston heartbreaker Bucky Dent could help them advance in October. Cole was chased in the third inning after serving up home runs to Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Schwarber, and the Yankees were eliminated early from the playoffs with a 6-2 loss to the rival Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees now head into another intriguing offseason as they continue to try to piece together a roster capable of ending their 12-year World Series drought. Yankee’s manager Aaron Boone’s 4 year contract is up. The Yankees organization has not yet said if Boone will return next season.
Tonight is the National League Wildcard Game with the St. Louis Cardinals at the Los Angeles Dodgers at 8:10 pm on TBS. The Dodgers are the 2020 World Series defending Champions. The Dodgers defeated the Rays to win the series in six games for their first championship in 32 years.
The best of seven 2021 World Series begins October 26th.
