SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) —After a quiet month during which no named storms formed in the region, Tropical Storm Fred’s heavy rains pelted the northern Caribbean as just south of Puerto Rico overnight.
The National Hurricane Center has issued tropical storm warnings for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti and the southern Bahamas are expected to be impacted by Fred today.
More than a month has passed since the last named Atlantic storm, Hurricane Elsa. But this time of summer usually marks the start of the peak of hurricane season.
