New York, NY ( 77WABC)- Apple announced a plan to scan U.S. iPhones for images of child sex abuse, garnering praise from child protection groups but also raising concern among some security researchers that the system could be misused by the government looking to spy on their citizens.
The tool designed to detected known images of child sexual abuse, called “neuralMatch,” will scan images before they are uploaded to iCloud. If it finds a match, the image will be reviewed by a human. If child pornography is confirmed, the user’s account will be disabled and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children notified.
“Apple’s expanded protection for children is a game changer,” John Clark, the president and CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, tells the Associated Press. “With so many people using Apple products, these new safety measures have lifesaving potential for children.”
