“Thanks to great investigative work by the @NYPD75Pct detectives, the man responsible for this brutal attack & robbery of a 68-year-old in #Brooklyn is now in police custody,” Shea said in a tweet.
Surveillance video captured during the incident last month shows the mugger approaching the 68-year-old man while he was riding a Citi Bike near the corner of Pitkin Avenue and Barbey Street in East New York around 9:05 a.m. on July 24. Police said the suspect touched the victim’s pockets and demanded his property.
When the victim resisted, the hooded man let loose a barrage of punches and kicks.
The video shows that the attacker continued to punch and kick the victim after he fell to the ground, and police said he then stole the victim’s cellphone and a silver necklace before fleeing down Pitkin Avenue.
The victim suffered a broken wrist, broken nose and multiple cuts and scrapes.
