Bergen County, NJ (77WABC)-Bridget Anne Kelly, who sent the infamous email “time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” is the Republican Candidate for Bergen County Clerk in November.
Kelly was the deputy chief of staff to former (R) Gov. Chris Christie when she sent the email which launched the “Bridgegate” scandal. Christie has not commented on Kelly’s candidacy.
Several local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge were closed for a three day period in September 2013 to allegedly punish Fort Lee’s Mayor for not endorsing Christie’s re-election bid. Christie has denied knowledge of the plan.
The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Kelly’s conviction in connection with the scandal and that of former Port Authority deputy director Bill Baroni in 2020. Kelly maintained all along that she was a “scapegoat.”
Kelly is the mother of four children and lives in Bergen County.
Her opponent in this November’s race is John Hogan, the incumbent Democratic County Clerk.
