A non-profit company that’s focused on preserving natural bodies of water has gotten one step closer to building a pool in New York City water —and yes, you can swim in it.
According to their Instagram page, + POOL received an official “confirmation to proceed with due diligence” by the New York City Economic Development Corporation after two years of review. The proposed location for the plus-shaped pool is in the heavily-polluted East River.
+ POOL is a project that has been in production for more than a decade designed to filter the water it floats in so people can swim in clean water, with four different + POOL strives to reclaim the river as a recreational resource for the city, while educating the public about water quality issues.
According to their website, + POOL will clean more than 600,000 gallons of river water every day, allowing people to swim in the usually-forbidden New York waterway. Next steps for the non-profit are figuring out the complicated engineering of the filtration systems, regulations and permits for building, and reaching their $20-25 million funding total.
