WASHINGTON (77WABC) — House Republicans voted to oust Representative Liz Cheney from her leadership position in Congress today, but still vowed to keep former President Donald Trump from getting close to the White House again.
The vote came after Cheney was one of the few Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment, blaming him for inciting the January 6 Capital riots. She also has regularly refuted his claims of election fraud.
According to CNN, Cheney was booed by other members of Congress on the House floor this morning, but remained firm in her opposition:
“We cannot let the former president drag us backward and make us complicit in his efforts to unravel our democracy. Down that path lies our destruction, and potentially the destruction of our country.”

House Republicans have rallied around New York Representative Elise Stefanik to replace Cheney, who votes less conservative but is known as a top Trump supporter. Many Republicans have come out in both support of Cheney and relief of her ousting.
This is leadership.
This is integrity.
This is Liz Cheney. And I’m damn proud to support her. https://t.co/hep7hW58sb

Cheney will still remain in Congress representing Wyoming voters, but it is likely that Cheney will face a primary challenge if she decides to run again in 2022.
