22-Year-Old Biker Dies in Queens as Motoring Deaths Rise

ambulance

Queens, NY (77WABC) – A 22-year-old motorcyclist died early Tuesday after losing control, striking a guardrail on the Van Wyck Expressway near Kennedy Airport in Queens.

According to police, the victim was on a 1998 Kawasaki motorcycle when he slammed into the guardrail and was found in a grassy area with severe trauma near exit 1 about 2:45 a.m. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s name has not yet been released to the public.

This is just another of many motorcycle accidents to occur in NYC this year. In 2020, 170 people died in motorcycle crashes in New York, with 50 of them being in NYC alone, according to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research.

Mayor Bill de Blasio created a program called “Vision Zero” in 2014 to help eliminate motoring deaths in NYC by 2024, however the effort has been criticized due to the number of motoring deaths increasing every year.

The Department of Transportation announced last September that New York City would lower the speed limit on nine major roads and increase radar tracking and cameras due to an increase of speeding during the COVID-19 pandemic.
