An 8 Year Old Critical After Jumping From A 6th Floor Balcony To Escape Flames

Bronx, NY (77WABC)-Firefighters were responding to a fire at an apartment building in the Morrisania section as an 8-year-old girl made the decision to jump from her 6th-floor balcony to escape flames shooting from her family’s apartment. She is in critical condition at a hospital after landing on a grassy area below breaking both of her legs. An FDNY Chief on the scene, Anthony Montera, says the girl’s decision to jump likely saved her life:

A total of 7 firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The building’s Tenant Association President Linda Kemp and two other good samaritans protected the girl from falling burning debris until help arrived:

The fire broke out at the 17 story apartment building at 540 East 169th Street around 6:30 pm. More than 100 firefighters responded. They had the blaze under control within an hour.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshall.
