New York, NY (77WABC)-NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio and American Museum of Natural History President Ellen V. Futter Barnard announced this morning during the Mayor’s Briefing at NYC Hall that the museum will serve as a Covid-19 vaccination site.
Vaccinations will be administered in the area of the Museum where the giant blue whale is on display. The Mayor said he thought about several ways to cleverly make the announcement ,”I would say it’s a whale of an announcement, ” said De Blasio, “or perhaps were are whale-coming this new site, it is the American Museum of Natural History.”
The Mayor said people will literally be vaccinated under the blue whale at the museum.
Museum President Ellen Futter Barnard joined the Mayor via video saying the site will welcome first NYCHA residents and District Council #37 members of the AFSCME many of whom work in cultural institutions.
She said “this institution is dedicated to fostering scientific knowledge and understanding and providing access to it.” she said she cannot even imagine a more important manifestation of our “mission in action.”
Mayor De Blasio also announced that NYC hit a new Covid-19 vaccination record on Friday with 106,000 vaccinations given on a single day. He said that brings the citywide Covid-19 vaccination total to 5,746,378 vaccinations given as of last Friday.
In NYC for those age 50 and up no appointment for a Covid-19 vaccination is necessary at city run sites. More information is available about eligibility and locations on the city’s website NYC.gov/vaccinefinder or by calling 1-877-vax-4NYC.
