(Lakewood, NJ/77WABC)-A wind-whipped brush fire was 50% contained as of Sunday night although it had burned at least 170 acres and damaged two businesses and several homes as firefighters dealt with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

The fire in Ocean County broke out in the area of Airport Road and Cedarbridge Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

A part-time firefighter is in stable condition after suffering a “cardiac emergency” while responding to the fire.

A portion of the Garden State Parkway near milepost 89 was shut down in both directions for a time.
The fire forced the evacuation of a Hilton Hotel on Rt. 70.
The fire came perilously close to a nearby Costco and Raymour & Flanigan furniture store. Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control before it damaged those businesses. The businesses did suffer some roof damage.
Nearby homes also suffered damage although none were completely destroyed.
