NEW YORK (77WABC) – The Chinese Communist government is violating every single provision in the United Nations’ Genocide Convention, according to an independent report by more than 50 global experts in international law regarding atrocities being committed in Xinjiang against the Uyghur population.

The report, released by the Newlines Institute for Strategy and Policy think tank in Washington DC, states that the Chinese government “bears state responsibility for an ongoing genocide against the Uyghur in breach of the (UN) Genocide Convention.”

The four-page UN Genocide Convention was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1948 and has a clear definition of what constitutes “genocide.”
China is part of  the convention, along with 151 other countries.  Article II of the convention states genocide is an attempt to commit acts “with an intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”
At least to two million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are believed to have been placed in detention centers across the region, according to the US State Department.  Former prisoners say they were abused mentally, physically, sexually and some even say they were forcibly sterilized.  The Chinese Communist Party run government has denied the claims and says the detention centers are necessary to prevent religious extremism and terrorism.
On January 19th, the Trump administration declared the Chinese government was committing genocide in Xinjiang. A month later, the Dutch and Canadian parliaments also passed similar motions despite opposition.

An exiled Uyghur activist has urged President Joe Biden to take concrete steps against China. Tahir Imin, who recently spoke to the New York Post, said criticizing the Communist regime is not enough, adding any country that believes China is committing “genocide”, should stop doing business with it. Imin, who had faced the Chinese oppression first hand, suggested the US boycott the 2022 Beijing winter Olympics.
