NEW YORK CITY (77WABC) – The man who is accused of strangling a police officer with a large heavy chain during an Election day protest in Manhattan Thursday night has been identified as 30 year old Levon Wheeler. Police say Wheeler was a resident of a Wards Island psychiatric facility.
Wheeler allegedly shoved the officer to the ground and then attempted to wrap the chain around the officer’s neck. It happened on Bond Street and Broadway in NoHo Thursday night, cops said.
Wheeler was charged with the following:
Assault (2) counts
Criminal Obstruction of Breathing
Resisting Arrest
Obstruction of Governmental Administration
Disorderly Conduct (2) counts
The NYPD tweeted about the incident and posted a picture of the chain.

Nineteen people in total were arrested during the Thursday night protest march from the Stonewall Inn through Lower Manhattan. Ten people received desk appearance tickets for a variety of misdemeanor crimes, meaning they will have to answer the charges in court at a later date. Another eight people received summonses.
