MLB: New York Yankees at New York Mets
NEW YORK (77 WABC) — The Mets will host the Yankees at Citi Field on the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, according to multiple reports.
It would mark the first time the two clubs faced one another on the anniversary of the terror attacks at the World Trade Center. Both clubs were instrumental in the city’s healing after the attacks.
The Mets played the first professional sporting event in New York City on September 21, 2001, which saw Mike Piazzi hit a memorable go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Atlanta Braves. The Yankees reached the World Series that year and had President George W. Bush throw out the first pitch before Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.
The specially scheduled game is expected to be announced on Thursday when Major League Baseball releases the 2021 schedule, according to Newsday. The game will mark just the second time that the two teams have played in New York on the 9/11 anniversary.
The Mets and Yankees will see one another during the shortened season this year, as well as in a pair of exhibition games that were announced on Tuesday.
Two clubs will play a warmup game on July 18 at Citi Field and then play again on July 19 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will also play the Philadelphia Phillies on July 20 in an exhibition matchup.
