A Rare Photo-Finish in the Kentucky Derby

Field of 20 horses racing in the Kentucky Derby

The field of 20 of the 2024 Kentucky Derby enter the first turn during the 150th Run For the Roses at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 4, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky.

(Louisville, KY) – Another Kentucky Derby is in the books. On Saturday, 20 horses took part in the 150th annual race from Churchill Downs. It was a photo-finish that declared Mystik Dan as the winner.

Sierra Leone secured the second place spot and the million dollar runner-up prize. The third place winner was Forever Young. The last time there was a three-horse photo finish was in 1947. The race favorite, Fierceness, came in 15th place.

The Kentucky Derby, often referred to as “The Run for the Roses,” stands as one of America’s most cherished sporting traditions. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century when Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., inspired by European horse racing, sought to establish a similar event in the United States.

On May 17, 1875, the first Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs, drawing a crowd of 10,000 spectators. Aristides, ridden by Oliver Lewis, clinched victory in that inaugural race, beginning a tradition that would captivate generations. Over the years, the Kentucky Derby has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, blending sport, fashion, and Southern hospitality.

Its rich history is adorned with legendary horses, jockeys, and trainers who have left a mark on the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. Today, the Kentucky Derby remains a celebrated event, attracting visitors from around the globe and continuing to embody the spirit of tradition and competition. Many celebrities were spotted in Kentucky yesterday, including New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Another NFL star, Travis Kelce, was also in attendance partying without his girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

Next up on the race track is the Preakness Stakes in Maryland. The Triple Crown closes out with the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Racetrack in June. But first, some hard-earned rest for Mystik Dan…
