Newark was the first airport to open in the New York metropolitan area, predating LaGuardia Airport by over a decade. Newark Liberty was the first in the country to have a paved runway and the second in the world to have a terminal and an air traffic control center.

(Newark, NJ) – While Newark Airport is routinely the butt of people’s jokes, officials at New Jersey’s largest airport are rolling out the red carpet in celebration this week. A recent survey from Skytrax gave Newark’s Terminal A a five-star rating — based on a detailed audit.
Recently renovated, Terminal A served around 15 million passengers in its first year post upgrades. Skytrax is an aviation industry ratings firm. Its officials say a five-star rating is a big deal — comparable to a film or actor winning an Academy Award. The audit examined the quality of facilities, operations, and aspects of customer service.
Terminal A and LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B in Queens, New York are the only two North American airport terminals to get five stars — which is Skytrax’s highest rating.
