NEW YORK (77 WABC) – A Brooklyn jury on Monday took about 3 hours to convict a Melville, Long Island man for the murder of one of the owners of the popular L&B Spumoni Gardens in Gravesend, Brooklyn. L&B’s owner Louis Barbati was gunned down outside his Dyker Heights home by a hooded shooter back on June 20, 2016. The suspect, Andres Fernandez was convicted by the jury for shooting Barbati at least five times after he arrived home carrying two loaves of bread and a bag with more than $10,000 in cash.
Police Investigators initially suspected that the murder was a mob hit over L&B’s secret pizza sauce recipe since Fernandez left the scene without taking Barbati’s bag of cash. Multiple videos from the neighborhood around L&B Spumoni Gardens and Barbati’s home in addition to Fernandez’s cell phone location data placed the suspect in the vicinity of both locations on the day of the murder. Fernandez was convicted of second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
