(New York, New York) – Netflix is reportedly preparing to part ways with Higher Ground Productions, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, as their multi-year agreement comes to a close. The partnership, launched in 2018, marked a major push by Netflix to bring high-profile voices into its original programming lineup. Through the deal, Higher Ground developed a mix of documentaries, films, and family content, including the Academy Award-winning American Factory.

With the contract now winding down, Higher Ground is expected to move away from an exclusive arrangement and pursue a more flexible strategy—working with multiple studios and platforms rather than staying tied to a single streamer.

The shift doesn’t mean an immediate break. Projects already in the pipeline under the existing deal are still expected to roll out on Netflix in the near future.

The move reflects a broader trend in the streaming industry, where production companies are increasingly opting for independence over long-term exclusivity. For Netflix, it signals the end of a high-profile collaboration. For Higher Ground, it opens the door to a wider range of partnerships moving forward.
