(Austin, Texas) – A new immigration proposal from Chip Roy is sparking backlash after it singled out New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani while outlining strict new rules tied to political ideology.

The bill would block non-citizens from entering the U.S. or becoming citizens if they support or are connected to movements like socialism, communism, Marxism, or Islamic fundamentalism. It would also open the door to deporting immigrants already living in the country under similar conditions.

Beyond that, the proposal would make those decisions largely unchallengeable in court, raising immediate concerns about due process and government overreach.

Roy argues the measure is meant to combat what he sees as dangerous ideologies gaining ground in the U.S. The legislation directly references Mamdani, a democratic socialist, using him as an example in its justification.

Mamdani has built a national profile pushing progressive policies in New York, including expanded transit, public safety reforms, and proposals like city-run grocery stores and universal childcare—plans that have energized supporters and drawn criticism from opponents.

The bill does not separate democratic socialism from more extreme political systems, setting up what will likely be a major legal and political fight if it moves forward.
