April 1st 1976: Apple Computer Founded in California Garage

social-templates-1

As part of 77 WABC’s countdown to America’s 250th birthday, we look back at a moment that helped spark the modern technology revolution.

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak officially founded Apple Computer Company, launching what would become one of the most influential companies in history.

The company began in the garage of Jobs’ parents’ home in Cupertino, California, where the pair worked to develop and sell their first product—the Apple I, a personal computer designed and hand-built by Wozniak.

At a time when computers were large, expensive, and largely inaccessible to the public, Apple’s early vision focused on making technology more personal and widely available.

The success of the Apple I and its successor, the Apple II, helped ignite the personal computing industry, paving the way for decades of innovation.

Over the years, Apple would go on to introduce groundbreaking products including the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad—reshaping industries and redefining how people interact with technology.

What started as a small garage operation would grow into one of the most valuable and recognizable companies in the world.

This story is part of 77 WABC’s “This Day in History” series, marking the countdown to America’s 250th birthday—honoring the moments, milestones, and events that shaped the nation.
