The White House marked Greek Independence Day with a celebration event and an official proclamation by President Donald Trump, commemorating March 25, 1821, when Greek revolutionaries began their war for independence from the Ottoman Occupation, under the rallying cry “Freedom or Death.” The proclamation recognized the historic ties between the United States and Greece and noted that America’s Founding Fathers drew inspiration from ancient Greek democracy, philosophy, and governance when shaping the principles of the American Republic.

The event brought together members of the Greek American community, government officials, and religious leaders to recognize the enduring relationship between the United States and Greece and the contributions of Greek Americans to American public life.

Among those in attendance were; U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Greek Americans who have served in senior government roles including Michael Rigas, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, and members of the Hellenic Caucus. Prominent Greek Americans included Chairman & CEO of Red Apple Group & 77 WABC owner and operator John Catsimatidis, his wife Margo Catsimatidis, and members of their family including their daughter Andrea Catsimatidis.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America was also present, continuing the tradition of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America participating in the annual White House Greek Independence Day event.

The annual celebration serves as a recognition of Greece as one of America’s oldest allies and highlights the longstanding cultural, diplomatic, and strategic ties between the two nations, as well as the role Greek Americans continue to play in government, business, media, and public service.
