As part of 77 WABC’s countdown to America’s 250th birthday, we highlight a turning point in New York football history.

On March 28, 1963, a new ownership group purchased the struggling New York Titans franchise of the American Football League, marking the beginning of a dramatic transformation for the team.

The Titans had been plagued by financial issues and declining attendance, putting the future of the franchise in doubt. The new owners stepped in to stabilize the organization and chart a new path forward.

Just weeks later, on April 15, 1963, the team would officially be renamed the New York Jets—ushering in a new identity inspired by the nearby LaGuardia Airport and the speed of the emerging jet age.

The rebrand, combined with improved management and a move to Shea Stadium, helped revive the franchise. Within a few years, the Jets would make history, led by quarterback Joe Namath, by winning Super Bowl III in one of the greatest upsets in football history.

Today, the franchise’s legacy can be traced back to that pivotal sale in March 1963, which set the stage for the New York Jets as fans know them today.

This story is part of 77 WABC’s “This Day in History” series, marking the countdown to America’s 250th birthday—honoring the moments, milestones, and events that shaped the nation.
