(New York, New York) – A 19-year-old man was stabbed aboard a crowded subway train in Manhattan on Thursday morning, leaving shaken commuters to witness the violent attack during peak rush hour.

The incident unfolded just after 8 a.m. on a northbound L train near the 1st Avenue Station in the East Village, according to police.

Authorities say the victim was stabbed in the leg following an apparent dispute with another rider. The exact cause of the altercation remains under investigation.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Early reports incorrectly suggested the teen had died, but officials later confirmed he survived the attack.

Police have detained a person of interest in connection with the stabbing, though no charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.

The brazen violence, unfolding in front of morning commuters, adds to growing concerns about safety across New York City’s transit system. The attack comes just days after a separate incident in Brooklyn, where a woman was assaulted on the subway in an unrelated case.
