(Dallas, Texas) – A man shot and killed by Dallas police during a standoff earlier this week had previously worked security for U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, according to multiple law enforcement sources cited by CBS News Texas.

The man, publicly known as Mike King, was killed Wednesday night after a confrontation with Dallas SWAT officers in a hospital parking garage. Police say King fled from authorities, barricaded himself inside a vehicle, and refused to surrender. Officers deployed tear gas to force him out, and when he allegedly pulled a gun, police opened fire.

Authorities say King had been wanted on charges related to impersonating a law enforcement officer. Investigators believe he had been using aliases while operating a business that arranged off-duty security work for police officers in North Texas.

Security ties to a member of Congress

Sources told CBS News Texas that King had served as part of the security detail for Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, including during public events and while she was campaigning in her recent U.S. Senate bid.

Images obtained by the outlet show King standing near Crockett at events and campaign appearances. Law enforcement sources say he also managed teams of security officers at several hotels in downtown Dallas and at his church.

Records reviewed by CBS News Texas show a person named Mike King received payments for “security services” from Crockett as recently as last year.

Questions about background and operations

Investigators say King ran an online platform called Off Duty Police Services, which connected North Texas officers with extra-duty jobs.

According to sources, King allegedly drove a replica undercover police vehicle and used license plates that had been stolen from vehicles parked outside a military recruiting office.

Authorities say his background — which sources claim includes a criminal history — is now raising questions about how he was able to coordinate security jobs for police officers and obtain a role providing security for a sitting member of Congress.

Officials decline to comment

Rep. Crockett’s office has declined to respond to questions about King’s role in her security operations. The Dallas Police Department has also not provided additional details about the case or the investigation into King’s activities.

The incident remains under investigation.
