(New York, New York) – A tense moment unfolded during a Minnesota fraud hearing this week when Rep. Nancy Mace sharply questioned Minnesota Governor Tim Walz over state spending on autism programs, pressing him on how much funding had been allocated during his time in office.

During the exchange, Mace asked Walz to specify the amount spent on autism-related services in Minnesota during a single year of his administration. Walz was unable to immediately provide a figure, prompting criticism from Mace and drawing attention online as clips of the hearing began circulating.

The confrontation comes amid broader scrutiny of Minnesota’s social service spending. Graphics circulating on social media compare autism funding levels under Walz to those during the administration of former Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. According to the comparison, Minnesota reportedly spent roughly $1 million on autism programs in 2017 under Dayton, while recent figures cited online claim spending reached approximately $343 million in 2024 under Walz.

Supporters of increased funding argue the surge reflects expanded services, diagnoses, and support programs for individuals with autism and their families. Critics, however, say the dramatic rise in spending warrants greater oversight and clearer accounting from state leadership.

The exchange between Mace and Walz quickly gained traction on social media, where commentators from both sides debated whether the funding increase represents necessary investment or excessive government spending.
