(New York, New York) – Gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman delivered a firm message on public safety this week following the Washington Square Park snowball incident involving NYPD officers.
After New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that no charges would be filed, describing the episode as “a snowball fight,” Blakeman emphasized the need for clear standards and accountability when it comes to protecting law enforcement.
In a statement, Blakeman said that targeting officers — regardless of the object used — should never be minimized.
“Assaulting police officers is not a game,” Blakeman said. “We must send a clear message that attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated. Respect for those who wear the uniform is non-negotiable.”
Blakeman framed the issue as one of leadership and public safety, arguing that maintaining order requires consistency and accountability.
Support From Law Enforcement
Police unions, including the Sergeants Benevolent Association, have also expressed concern over the decision not to pursue charges. SBA President Vincent Vallelong warned that downplaying incidents involving officers could embolden more serious confrontations.
“Today it’s snowballs. Tomorrow it could be rocks, bottles, or worse,” Vallelong said.
