A homeless person stands among steam to keep warm during a cold day in Washington
(New York, NY) — At least seven people have now been found dead in New York City, apparently due to the brutal cold from this past weekend’s storm. Mayor Mamdani says a number of the victims had interactions with the city’s shelter system in the past. He says it’s still too early to share a cause of death, however, “we haven’t seen this kind of cold in eight years.” The mayor also praised outreach workers for bringing some 170 New Yorkers in from the cold. He said city outreach workers “know where they have to go to actually find and meet and make the case to homeless New Yorkers (to come in from the cold).” He added, it’s also the response of New Yorkers calling 311.
