77 WABC’s coverage of Veterans Day 2025 was sponsored by the Tunnel To Towers foundation.

(New York, NY) – In honor of our nation’s military and the service members who have taken up arms in defense of the United States, a parade marched through Midtown Manhattan for Veterans Day. Dating back to 1919, veterans have gathered to march and wave to gathered crowds, in celebration of military service.

The event begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at Madison Square Park, and the parade steps off from the Eternal Light Flagstaff. They march up Fifth Avenue, alongside bands, floats, and veterans. Over 20,000 participants and 40,000 spectators take part each year. It’s the country’s largest Veterans Day parade.

Our own Greg Kelly is a veteran and offers his perspective…

It was a special celebration this year as we marked the 250th anniversary of the US Army, Navy, and Marines being formed — in order to fight the Revolutionary War. Down at Arlington National Ceremony, President Trump thanked US veterans. He said the country will never forget how the military has sacrificed to keep the country “safe, sovereign, and free.” Vice President JD Vance, himself a US Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq, also spoke at the ceremony. President Trump had earlier laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Also in Manhattan, a ceremony will be held at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum at 3:30 in the afternoon. Over in New Jersey, there are a number of Veterans Day events going on, including the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the New Jersey Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Holmdel. Governor Phil Murphy pardoned eleven veterans at that event. He says actions taken during a person’s hardest chapter should not define them, especially those who made sacrifices for the nation.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer honored veterans in the snow during Fort Lee’s Veterans Day ceremony at the area VFW hall. He pushed for unity, saying Americans owe it to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to put aside differences.

A good portion of that day’s programming centered around veterans, and the military, all while the federal government and its shutdown was affecting the armed forces in real time. Here’s some more select audio from our Minicast page, which always has a bunch of choice cuts from shows and news reports.
