(New York, NY) — Students across New York City could lose their rides to school next month, if a possible school bus strike happens.
The union representing some 12-thousand school bus drivers says they won’t be behind the wheel November 1st without a new deal. Private bus companies notified the state Labor Department on Monday that unless a citywide panel approves a new deal by the close of business on Halloween, they’ll have to lay off the drivers.
The last deal expired this summer – the drivers have been working under emergency extensions since. Student advocacy groups say complaints about bad – and even no-show bus drivers are way up – and want greater accountability.
