Nor’Easter Heads Our Way

(New York, NY) — Governor Kathy Hochul is urging New Yorkers to prepare ahead of an approaching Nor’Easter by monitoring local forecasts, on neighbors and using caution if traveling. The National Weather Service is issuing a high wind watch for Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau and Suffolk Counties from noon on Sunday through 6 a.m. on Monday with potential for downed trees and power lines.

A coastal flooding watch has been issued for New York City, Southern Westchester County and Long Island beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is urging people to stay off boats and beaches and to stay vigilant if they live in basement apartments.

Meanwhile,  in New Jersey where the storm is expected to hit hardest, Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared that all 21 counties will enter a State of Emergency at 10 p.m. on Saturday in preparation for the dangerous storm expected to continue into Monday. She’s urging folks to remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary with parts of the state forecasted to experience moderate-to-major coastal flooding, inland flash flooding, sustained winds of up to 60 miles per hour, and localized rain of up to five inches.

There’s also potential for significant beach erosion and dune breaching, due to the very high surf. Way notes the dangerous coastal storm will bring extreme weather conditions for several counties, especially those on the Shore and reminding all residents to stay informed on evacuation protocols.

MTA Chair Janno Lieber believes the biggest threat to train service will be the wind, as opposed to the amount of rain. So, the MTA is prepositioning trains and tying them down. He also says while there could be some service disruptions, the impact may be minimal for the Monday morning commute, since a lot of workers have Monday off because it’s Columbus Day.
