(New York, NY) – The US Secret Service says it uncovered a plot that aimed to take down the telecommunications abilities within New York City and beyond. Agents and their partners apparently found a massive network of SIM servers that could make millions of phone calls instantaneously — which could knock offline cell phone service as well as 911 service.
The “safe houses” where the servers were located show otherwise bare tables with what almost look like walkie talkies set up in rows. All of the locations are within 35 miles of New York City — where world leaders have gathered for the UN General Assembly. Eyewitness News and its parent organization ABC News reports a group connected to China is behind the plot.
Apparently the investigation began as a result of “swatting” calls, in which anonymous, hoax calls are placed — faking violent situations — so as to draw out SWAT teams. From there, a task force tracked burner phones and other devices used to make those calls — which led them to the safehouses.
As for the timeline, it’s not clear when the equipment was originally discovered. The Secret Service says the investigation continues.
