New York, NY) — There’s been another Legionnaires’ disease death in Harlem. That makes two deaths and over 50 sickened after the disease was first detected about a week and a half ago in several zip codes in Central Harlem. The Health Department just finished cleaning out 11 cooling towers that showed evidence of the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. The disease is a type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria which grows in warm water. Officials say people living or working in the Central Harlem area with flu-like symptoms should get checked out.
City Health officials say the disease was initially detected on July 25th and the cluster of patients is from five zip codes across Harlem.
