(Smithtown, NY) — The deadly flooding in Central Texas has been a wakeup call for many camp owners. Margaret Valez Cooper, who owns the Ivy League School and Day Camp in Smithtown tells Newsday TV, camps need to make sure all safety protocols are in place. Cooper and her husband Noah recently upgraded the safety measures at their 16-acre camp after a torrential downpour last summer. The land go so soaked, parts turned into a lake.
After that storm, the camp added weather monitors and have a director who’s in-charge of watching weather forecasts and apps, with the entire staff ready to jump into action when necessary. The camp also holds evacuation drills through the summer so campers and staff know what to do, and where to go, in the event of flash flooding.
