(New York, NY) – The New York Mets recalled 23-year-old Luisangel Acuna from triple-A Syracuse before their Thursday doubleheader against the Orioles. The brother of Braves’ star Rondald Acuna Jr., hit .286 in the minors after being sent down in late June. He can play second base, shortstop or outfield.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says the team wanted him to receive regular playing time, but now club officials believe he is prepared to contribute to the team again. To facilitate Acuña’s return, outfielder Travis Jankowski was designated for assignment. Acuña got into action for the Mets during what was a lost day — dropping both ends of the doubleheader in Baltimore.
